Amazon Conservation at COP30: Bringing the Amazon to the Center of Climate Action

This November, the world’s largest climate summit, the Climate Change Conference 2025 COP30, will take place in Belém, Brazil, marking the first time it will be held in the Amazon. We at Amazon Conservation Association, along with our partners, will be there to help elevate the voices, science, and on-the-ground solutions from the Amazon to the critical climate talks that will define the future of our planet.

What is the COP30?

The 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) will convene leaders from nearly 200 countries to advance international commitments on climate change. This year, not only will the conference be in Brazil, but specifically in the city of Belém, located at the mouth of the Amazon River Delta, underscoring the Amazon’s essential role in regulating the global climate and highlighting the urgency of protecting this vital ecosystem. COP30 will provide a pivotal opportunity to align global ambition with local action and to secure the resources and political will needed to protect the world’s largest tropical forest.

Our presence at COP30

Throughout COP30, Amazon Conservation Association and our partners will host and participate in key events, panels, forums, and collaborative meetings to highlight the Amazon’s importance to global climate stability and showcase locally driven, science-based solutions to halt illegal deforestation, protect the core of the Amazon, build a forest-based economy for a sustainable development future, and drive regional policy action across the basin. We will also share exclusive findings on the Amazon’s tipping point and the state of gold mining in the region. Together, we can ensure that the Amazon has a strong voice and a place in the global climate agenda.

Sizing Up the Gold Rush: The Journalist’s Guide to a New Way of Combating the Amazon’s Mining Crisis

November 13 | 9:00–10:30 AM (Local Belém time) at Socioenvironmental Journalism House (Casa Carmina)

Illegal gold mining is expanding across the Amazon, often hidden from public view. This session introduces the Amazon Mining Watch platform — an innovative tool that uses satellite data, AI, and cross-border collaboration to expose mining trends. Journalists will learn how to use this resource to uncover new stories, strengthen investigations, and support transparency and action across the region.

Keeping the Amazon Tipping Point at Bay: What the Data Shows and Where Action Is Critical

November 14 | 9:00–10:30 AM (Local Belém time) at Socioenvironmental Journalism House (Casa Carmina)

New scientific analyses show where the Amazon is most vulnerable to deforestation, fires, and shifting rainfall—and how these pressures are affecting the forest’s resilience. This session will explore how AI, satellite monitoring, and regional collaboration are transforming our understanding of the tipping point. Participants will discover how data-driven insights can drive solutions, strengthen policies, and support coordinated pan-Amazonian action to keep the Amazon standing and its “flying rivers” flowing.

Civil Society Taking Action on Nature Crime in the Amazon: Preliminary Survey Results and Collaborative Pathways

November 17 | 9:00–11:30 AM (Local Belém time) at Socioenvironmental Journalism House (Casa Carmina)

An internal workshop with members of civil society to present initial findings from a regional assessment on nature crime prevention and co-create strategies to enhance cross-border collaboration and capacity building. Members of the media are welcome to attend in the last half hour.

Halting Illegal Deforestation Networking Reception hosted by Amazon Conservation

November 17 | 8:00 - 9:30 PM (Local Belém time) at Socioenvironmental Journalism House (Casa Carmina)

Join us, fellow NGOs, funders, journalists, Indigenous leaders, and allies for an exclusive, informal cocktail reception with those leading on-the-ground solutions to halt illegal deforestation across the Amazon Basin. Brief opening remarks will be provided by Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, President of COP20, representatives from major funders to the Amazon region, and local forest guardians. Take this moment to exchange experiences, strengthen relationships, and amplify collective solutions for people and nature in the Amazon Basin.

Combatting Illegal Gold Mining in the Amazon: Cutting-Edge Technology for Effective Action

November 18 | 2:00–3:30 AM (Local Belém time) at CCCA House

Join us and our local partners as we present our enhanced Amazon Mining Watch dashboard, highlighting its new features (including the integration of Conservation Strategy Fund’s Mining Impacts Calculator) and the preliminary findings from our assessment of country-specific legal and institutional frameworks related to artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Amazonian nations. The session will identify the challenges hindering the fight against illegal gold mining and facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration opportunities among civil society organizations to drive the solutions needed to stop mining deforestation and its climate impacts across the Amazon Basin.

Amazon Mining Watch: A Civil Society Coalition for the Early Detection and Effective Enforcement of Illegal Gold Mining in the Amazon

November 14 | 3:30-4:14 PM (Local Belém time) - in the Blue Zone - Colombia Pavilion

We showcase the new features of our AI-powered platform “Amazon Mining Watch and the comparative analysis of national regulatory frameworks for gold mining, as a key input for convergence of Pan-Amazonian policy efforts and for the Colombian government's proposal for mineral traceability.

Launch of ObservaREDD+: An Interactive Platform Tracking Jurisdictional REDD+ Implementation Across the Brazilian Amazon

November 15 | 2:00 - 3:30 PM (Local Belém time) at Rodovia Augusto Montenegro, 4300, Ed. Parque Office - BelOffice Coworking | Belém-PA

ObservaREDD+ brings together key data on the implementation of Jurisdictional REDD+ programs across Brazil’s Legal Amazon. The platform provides accessible information for researchers, policymakers, and civil society to monitor progress and ensure sustainable development throughout the biome.

It's a partnership between the Center of Life Institute (ICV) and Amazon Conservation Association, with support from Amazônia de Pé and the Socioenvironmental Observatories of Acre, Mato Grosso, and Rondônia.
